Bailey -- wonderfully informative : This book excels at conveying first the culture and spirituality of hill tribes in Thailand and second the treatment of elephants throughout the country. Because the country depends so heavily on tourism and elephants are so involved in that, visitors really should know what has happened to the "nice" elephants that they ride or paint or watch do tricks. Knowledge is the only thing that may save these intelligent creatures from a lifetime of abuse. This book also, of course, gives a wonderful depiction of the experiences of a quite remarkable woman who is pioneering a new way to relate to and treat elephants and who has created and runs Elephant Nature Park near Chaing Mai. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Karen -- A beautiful and inspiring account of one woman's life mission : Having recently spent a week volunteering at the Elephant Nature Park in Thailand, I was delighted to discover a book had been written about Lek Chailert, ENP's founder. She is an amazing woman who has devoted her life to the care and rights of elephants, giving them a voice, championing for their freedom and rescuing those magnificent creatures who aren't able to live in the wild as nature intended. Parts of this book are confronting which is why it should be read by anyone who has ever contemplated riding an elephant or visiting an elephant park which uses elephants to entertain tourists.
